MonicaGreetings!

Summer is in full swing and I have to say, it has been my favorite thus far. My daughter and I have been soaking up plenty of vitamin D (with sunscreen, of course) and have thoroughly enjoyed our many barbecues with friends and family, as well as the amazing weather we have had.

While healthy eating is a no-brainer, many of you may be asking, "What more can I do to lead a healthful, clean lifestyle?" Exercise is obviously a key ingredient. I have personally become a bikram yoga nut this year. What might not be so obvious, however, is the importance of vitamins, now more than ever. This month our nutrition article focuses on the real need for vitamins.

I am thrilled to begin carrying Dr. Morrison's Daily Pack. This is the first time in 8 years I have ever endorsed a supplement of any kind. This multi-pack is the most convenient and balanced on the market. And now you can try it this month using the coupon included in this newsletter.

Below you will find a recipe for a delicious salad. A visit to the Hamptons recently inspired me to share this yummy, refreshing dish with you. I know you will enjoy it!

Happy Eating!

Monica Lynn

Excerpt from the I Love Lucy Show

While this episode showing Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball) promoting an alcoholic "vitamin" product was completely ridiculous, the need for vitamins is very real and relevant today. This is true even if you lead a healthy lifestyle-- a balanced diet and a regular exercise routine.

Today, more than ever, the environment depletes your body's nutrients. Farming processes, environmental toxins, and stress are just some of the reasons that vitamins should be part of your life. These factors are key to the growing trend of eating organic. Did you know 5 Squares has an Organic Plan? Just call our office to inquire.

Farming Processes: Decline of Nutrients in Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
Farming practices have changed and produce fruits and vegetables with fewer nutrients. In order to maximize harvests each season, farmers re-use soil over and over again, resulting in nutrient deficient soil and by extension, plants. Also in order to ship fruits and vegetables long distances, farmers must pick the produce early to avoid spoiling during transport. Picking produce before ripening reduces the nutrient content. Even acid rain impacts the soil and plants.

Environmental Toxins
Your body loses valuable nutrients as it battles the many toxins in the environment. Pollution in the air and in over-processed foods burdens your body on a constant basis. Some tap water is contaminated by heavy metals or chemicals and pesticides that have leaked in to water resources. Excessive exposure to free radicals in the polluted environment damages DNA production and blood vessels. Additional nutrients from vitamin supplements help to replenish those hardworking nutrients and counteract the effects of the toxins bombarding you every day.

Stress and Your Unique Genetic Makeup
Stress attacks your body's inventory of nutrients, especially vitamin C, B complex and zinc. While each person's nutrient requirements are different, it makes sense to ensure you have all the nutrients you need to lead a healthy life. And while we can't guarantee popularity if you take vitamins, as Lucy Ricardo promised, we can assure you that vitamins can help boost your body's defenses.

Please keep in mind that too many vitamins can be dangerous and some can interact with your medications, so you should always check with your physician before taking any supplements. If you have any questions regarding vitamins, please email us.
